Laos is a land of unexplored natural beauty.  Abounding in ancient cultural attractions and monasteries, stunning landscapes, quiet rural sojourns, engaging adventure destinations, and a welcoming culture, this landlocked country is also known for its old-world charm and warm attitude towards tourists. A country rich in history, culture and untouched nature, Laos provides multiple reasons to get behind the wheel and go exploring!

However, we do not advice going on unbeaten paths without a guide due to fear of UXO (unexploded ordnance). Stick to regular routes, and take the help of local people and guides as required.

Mylaocar.com brings you a list of places you can drive to from Vientiane, the capital of Laos.

  • Vang Vieng: About 4 hours drive from Vientiane, Vang Vieng is a place that offers adventure, stunning nature, and a quiet countryside – all rolled into one! You could go hiking, tubing, kayaking, cycling, rock climbing, motorbiking, or even take a hot-air balloon ride here! You can also visit the various caves, lagoons, waterfalls, rice fields or explore the surrounding mountains.

  • Luang Prabang: Luang Prabang is about 6 hours drive from Vientiane, and about 4 hours away from Vang Vieng. Known as the cultural capital of Laos, Luang Prabang is a picturesque UNESCO-protected old city that offers a mix of traditional Laotian and French colonial architecture. Surrounded by Nam Khan and Mekong rivers, this area abounds in natural beauty, and has many waterfalls to boast of – Kuang Si being the most popular among them. You can go hiking down the waterfront, take a boat ride, climb Mount Phou Si for a great view, cycle around the old town, or simply enjoy the natural beauty here. You can also visit the various ornamental temples, the Royal Palace Museum, visit the Pak Ou caves, try the street food, or shop at the famous night market here.

  • Plain of Jars: About 7 hours away from Vientiane is the Plain of Jars. Located on a plateau in central Laos, this area gets its name from the numerous ancient stone jars scattered over hundreds of square kilometers. However, you need to be very vigilant in the area as only few of the multiple recorded jar sites have so far been cleared of UXO.

You can take a boat ride to explore the mysterious cave.

  • Pakse: Pakse is located at the confluence of the Mekong and Don rivers in southern Laos, and is about 9 hours away from Vientiane.  Along with the Champasak historical heritage museum, Wat Luang, and Wat Pha Bat are the major attractions here.
